What does November mean to Tybee fishermen? It means
go out there and get after them because some of the best fishing of the
year is upon us now.
Trout, Redfish and Flounder will be hitting HARD on
Shrimp, Mud Minnows and artificials. Mixed in with these fish we will
find Black Drum and Sheepshead. All these make for some pretty coolers
of fish in November.
Coming cold fronts and dropping water temperatures
cause these gamefish to feed heartily to fatten up for the winter. On
good weather days they will bite from sunrise to sunset regardless of
the tide or moon phases, The Savannah River from Hutchinson Island to
the Jetties will be good. Also, Bull River to Wassaw should be hot.
Recent evidence of excellent fishing was last months
Locals Tournament at Chimney Creek. Mother Nature delt us a raw morning
with rough water and a twenty knot west wind but by the afternoon the
weather got nice and the thirty-five participants returned with coolers
full of fish. The team of Captain Stan Allen, George Rentiers and Roscoe
Williams won first place Trout and Redfish. The team of Captain Zack
Bowen and Captain Brian Woelfor of Captain Judy Charters won second
place Trout Honors. The team of Bill Bradley, Bill Dowell, Tom Fall and
yours truely won first place Flounder and second place Redfish. Special
Angler Award went to J.T. aka John Thomas for catching a Snook for the
second year in a row. Too bad he was disqualified for being late for the
weigh in. Rumor has it he got lost and was fishing somewhere near
Florida.
The best part of the tournament was the Fish Fry
afterwards. Emo’s team of Bob Banks, Brezzy Breazel and Gay Walker
proved they are chefs with another great feed. Everyone raved about and
gobbled up the Shrimp Bread. Special thanks to Belinda & Jack Flanigan
for sponsoring another great event.
November is Thanksgiving Month and anglers here at
Tybee have plenty to be thankful for - the Trout are back and the
Redfish population is very healthy. It has been a good year for us and
the future looks promising. We all have our stories and memories from
the season and one involves ten year old Ramsey Allen and her dad
Captain Stan.
Ramsey and Stan were enjoying a nice day fishing out
in Wassaw Sound when something hit so hard and fast that Stan had to
pull the anchor and give chase to avoid Ramsey getting her reel spooled.
They fought the fish for over thirty minutes with Ramsey battling with
only ten pound test on a Shimano 2000 reel. The result was a twenty-five
pound Jack Crevalle - one of the toughest fighting inshore fish around.
Ramsey and Stan took a picture and released this one to fight again.
Congratulations Ramsey !!!!!
So everybody get out and enjoy the rest of this
season and remember
EAT FISH AND LIVE LONGER !!!
